Interdisciplinary study

Any broadminded humanist project involves interdisciplinarity, and history shows a crowd of cases, as seventeenth-century Leibniz's task to create a system of universal justice, which required linguistics, economics, management, ethics, law philosophy, politics, and even sinology. For example, social science disciplines such as anthropology and sociology paid little attention to the social analysis of technology throughout most of the twentieth century. As a result, many social scientists with interests in technology have joined science, technology and society programs, which are typically staffed by scholars drawn from numerous disciplines.

It provides a program of study targeted toward students who desire a non-traditional approach to learning within a broad range of disciplines: The BSIS is a university-wide degree program that enables students to create interdisciplinary specialties that prepare them for careers in a world that increasingly bridges academic disciplines.

Students pursue two or three subject-area concentrations that represent academic interests they wish to integrate into a meaningful program.

A four-course core offers students the intellectual tools to identify connections between their concentrations and engage in interdisciplinary problem-solving. The interdisciplinary core is issues-driven and provides pragmatic and thought-provoking approaches to thinking, research, problem solving, and communication.

Students, working with the program director, will choose two or three major areas of concentration. One thing to note: You have to have 18, 18, 18 hours in three different areas, or 27, 27 in two areas, and they all have to be in addition to the general education requirements.

Three interdisciplinary initiatives currently merging fields of study at the Academy are the Professional Maritime Studies program, the Center for Arctic Study & Policy, and the Superintendent’s Council for Cyber Education and Training. While our most popular program is the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, we also offer a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies – Transnational Gender, Race, and Sexuality Studies Track.

In addition to our major programs of study, we offer minors. Since the program is a student-designed, interdisciplinary major, course selections will vary by student.
